PEACE TO NIGERIA
1966 is playing itself out again. I was not too young then to know about the civil war in Nigeria. Of course I recall vividly when Lagos was bombed. I was out playing with my friends when the bombs hit somewhere in the Yaba area of Lagos. I recall vividly how we all scampered to our various homes. Though, living in Lagos, the consequences of war was visible to us, kids, then.
For those who do not know the consequences of war, they should not go far, and look at today's devastation of the Northeast from the Bokoharam insurgency. If they are not satisfied, they can check clips of Liberia, Sieera Leone, Rwanda or Afghanistan or Syria on YouTube. The scenario is horrible. All our friends and brothers who have nothing to do with these horrible propaganda will be made to go Eastwards where they actually have no bearings or ties.
Mind you, since the Southeast is landlocked they will continue to insist on including parts of the South South and nobody will agree to that. This is how war starts. Those who will suffer most are children, women and old people. And many youths will For in their prime. For all those who are keeping quiet now, know that you will not have the chance to talk once war starts. You all have the chance to speak out for peace now. This is the time to blow the ember of a peaceful coexistence and not war. This is the time to form groups for peace. This is the time to use your social media platform and following to preach the gospel of peace. I am yet to see groups like Igboland against War, Yoruba against war, Hausa against war, Igbos love Nigeria, Yorubas for an Equitable Nigeria, Hausas for one Nigeria.
In war, all sides will lose and eventually there will always be devastation, more hatred, unfulfilled dreams, suspicion loss of lives and properties, economic and political collapse. Even the little we have now won't be there, food will be scarce, families broken beyond remedy. The rich will run away abroad and it's mostly the poor and middle class that will suffer. Neighbouring countries will close their borders and many will be trapped, extreme hunger will be the order of the day.
This impending Hiroshima can still be avoided. Let the elites from all the warring ethnic groups seat down and work out the modalities for equity, justice and a peaceful coexistence. Let all our brothers, sisters, wives and husbands stand up to be counted for peace. There are more Igbo outside Igboland than inside. They stand to lose everything and gain nothing from this act that is playing out. And people from every part, every corner of Nigeria will be affected by the war. Go and ask former Bendelites and Rivers what they suffered during the civil war. Before it becomes irreversible let this death bearing vehicle stop and move no more.
God bless Nigeria
